Y&R: Has Niki always been helpless?

I don't mean that as sarcastic as it sounds either. I just started watching Y&R about three weeks ago after a 15 year gap. I don't remember her being so needy and dependent. She's not doing any of the things people do to stay sober and change their lives. It's sad in a way. Any spoiler info on how her lot gets better?
